The Gift

I wanted just to bring a gift

To the Lord of everything

So I painted him a work of art

Of clouds and angel wings

I put it in a brand- new box

And wrapped it up with pride

I wanted him to open up

A masterpiece inside

I got the fancy paper

With sparkles glittering so

I found a special ribbon

And tied it with a bow

The time had come to bring my gift

But I was so excited

That I tripped and fell in all my haste

And the package became blighted

The bow was crushed, the paper torn

As I stood before the King

And I wished I could retrieve the gift

From the Lord of everything

But as his hand received the gift

The box vanished from sight

And the gift itself was not the one

That I had placed inside

Instead, I saw my heart was there

But changes had been made

A new humility shone through

That would not fade away

In silence I stood waiting

Unadorned by any pride

The Lord smiled and said “Oh my child,

This is just what I desired!”
