The Cost

I’ve used most of my money

I have spent a long, long time

I’ve traveled quite a distance

In this life that I called mine

Looking for the answer

That seemed so hard to find

I had to clear away the cobwebs

That cluttered up my mind

Until one day I saw You

You were standing by my side

Just waiting as the shadows

Gave way to glorious light

The answer was not

What I had thought

Not in things I could possess

Not in what I could accomplish

Not even in success

Not in relationships held dear

Not in what others think

These all but stand on shifting sand

And I’m about to sink

The answer is You

Your words are true

And I would trade all that I am

If only I could start anew

I would bring You everything

For only You I’d live

But I’m afraid it’s much too late

I’ve so little left to give

My child, I’ve been here all along

Waiting near the brink

But I can’t save a drowning man

Until he starts to sink

Until the struggle is over

And hope in self has died

Just fall into my nail-scarred hands

For your sins, once crucified

So I could give abundant life

A new life, never ending

Though your time on earth may not be long

Eternity is just beginning

But it will cost you everything

As you trust that I am able

Turn your pockets inside out, child

Lay those pennies on the table
