Alarm clock sounds at five a.m.
Informing me I must begin
To rise and shine, be on my way
Get out of bed and face the day
And so I stumble out of bed
Put coffee on to clear my head
Take a few minutes to read and pray
And wonder what’s in store today
Then all at once the rush is on
To shampoo, shower and when that’s done
Brush my teeth, blow-dry my hair
And find the perfect clothes to wear
Apply some makeup (not too much)
A smile for the final touch
But just before I’m out the door
The mirror gets a last-minute view
Think to myself “Alas it’s true-
guess that’s the best that I can do”
A change of pace sometimes is mine
I get away and spend some time
In meadows green near mountain streams
Away from smog where I can breathe
I stand in wonder and in awe
Amidst the handiwork of God
You spoke a word- THIS came to be
And yet you care for even me
So here I stand with unwashed hair
In purple socks- and do I care?
No makeup on, in wrinkled gear
In the temple You’ve created here
Mere words cannot rightly express
How this beauty glows with Holiness
And with a wink I ask of You
Is this the best that You can do?
And then I hear through heaven’s door
A whispered hope- “No child- there’s more”
