On Grieving

You will cry often and often unexpectedly

Don’t be ashamed of your tears

Sharp edges of goodbye are smoothed

to softer lines by the washing of your tears.

You will laugh sometimes and just as unexpectedly

Don’t be ashamed of the sound of your laughter.

Laughter will one day restore to you

the joy your memories held.

Everything has changed

So much is the same.

There will be blue skies

And family get-togethers

And good friends.

Take your time

What you have lost

Is worthy of

Both your tears and laughter.

Oh loving Father who now holds

My loved one in your hands

I pray that you will hold me too

And help me to accept your comfort

And help me to live through this pain

Trusting that the time will come

When I can truly live…
