Soft pink ruffle with white flowers
Adorning canopy of little girl bed
Matching bedspread (of course)
Available at Kidzone on McHenry Ave.
Little bed, not empty- but full
Of dreams, soft golden curls
Bedtime prayers and giggles
Music of my imagined girl
Someday I will buy you little bed
And She will be a princes
A miscarriage ripped her away
And time slowly ate away my chances
But I accepted this as fate
My life unfolding as it should-
Not as I wished
It’s been so long now
That I can walk through the baby isle
And actually see the dresses with matching shoes
The ribbons, the bows, embroidered borders
And regard them with a practiced indifference
Until yesterday driving down McHenry
I saw the sign “Kidzone going out of business”
I pulled over to the side of the road and wept
For the state of the economy, for jobs lost,
For soft pink ruffled canopies sitting in a warehouse
Never used
